What to Expect

You will be asked to sign a consent form giving Project Life permission to complete a confidential intake and collect a urine specimen for testing. The lab results will not be available for 3-5 business days.  The nurse will call with your results.  You should not use a tampon, douche or urinate one hour prior to testing or have intercourse 48 hours prior to testing.  Also, if you are menstruating at the time of your appointment, you will need to reschedule.

STI testing at Project Life is limited to Chlamydia and Gonorrhea.  If you are concerned you may have been exposed to other infections, you are encouraged to consult with your doctor for further testing or call us for a free/low cost clinic referral.

NOTE: Treatment for positive results is available at Project Life at no cost, based on financial need.

What is the difference between Sexually Transmitted Diseases and Sexually Transmitted Infections?  

STI – Sexually Transmitted Infection means that a germ, virus, bacteria, or parasite that has the potential to cause disease or illness is present inside a person’s body. Someone with an STI will not necessarily have symptoms or signs that a pathogen is in the body, and might not even feel sick. Someone with an STI can unknowingly pass on an infection – if they do not have any signs or symptoms, they are probably not aware they are carrying an infection and may not take the proper precautions of protecting their partner. Not all STIs result in the development of a STD. 

STD – Sexually Transmitted Disease means the infection is actually causing the person to feel sick or presents with signs and symptoms alerting the person that something is wrong. Someone with an STD should be aware that there is some underlying medical issue based on signs, symptoms, or from feeling ill.  All STD’s are preceded by STI(s) and not all are curable.
